LED DIMMER CIRCUIT

INTRODUCTION: For several past years, LEDs have been introduced with the eventual goal of replacement of CFLs and incandescent lamps. LEDs are very sensitive components having specific ratings of current and voltages, in case of exceeding these values their life span can be increased or decreased to the considerable extent. LEDs are basically current controlled devices that’s why the amount of light generated by them will depend upon the amount of current flowing through them.

COMPONENTS:

1)Resistor 1 k ohm Or 390 Ohm
2)potentiometer 10 K or 50 K
3)capacitor 2 capacitors of 100nF
4)silicon switching diode 2 switches (1N4148)
5)IC 555 Timer
6)LED Any bright color
7)battery 9 Volts

Working: The circuit works in such a way that 0 volts will make the led off while high voltage will make it on. Since LEDs work on defined limits of current and voltages therefore a resistor is used in series with led in order to control current through it. One way to achieve dimming of led is to use a variable resistor to adjust the current entering into it. The brightness of LEDs will depend on the output voltage. As voltage regulator is variable the brightness of LEDs will also be varying. Here potentiometer can be used for two purposes:

  • For rough adjustment of voltage
  • To trim the brightness in finer resolutions.

Thus, by tuning the circuit for proper values of current and voltages desired brightness of led can be achieved.

  • backlights for smart phones
  • GPS navigation systems
  • Flash lights
