Traffic Lights Controlling Circuit

Introduction:

This Traffic Light Control circuit is very easy and simple electronic project which is used to handle  the traffic.By using this circuit we can get rid of  the vehicle collisions and traffic jams. Project will operate in such a way that it give guidance  to the driver whether to drive or yield.

There are three indication lights or controls, which will provide the instruction to the driver.

  • RED light – tell the driver to STOP .
  • YELLOW light – tell the driver to WAIT.
  • GREEN light – yell the driver to GO.

Circuit Diagram:

Components:

  • 100K, 22K and 330 ohm resistors
  • 1µF, 10µF and 2.2mF capacitors
  • 555 timer IC (As a pulse generator)
  • 4017 IC counter
  • Six 1N4148 diodes
  • 1M Potentiometer (Controls the timing of pulse generated by 555 timer)
  • Red, yellow and green LEDs
  • 9V Battery

Working:

This traffic light circuit is made with the help of counter IC, which is usually used for Sequential Circuit.

The main component is 4017 counter IC which is used to glow the Red, yellow and green LEDs respectively. 555 timer  IC work as a pulse generator which gives an input to the 4017 counter IC. Timing of glow of LED lights totally depends upon the 555 timer’s pulse, which can be control through Potentiometer.  LEDs are not connected directly with 4017 counter, so the lights won’t be stable. We have used the 1N4148 diodes and the LEDs to get the feasible output. One of the demerit of this circuit is that we can not have an exact timing , but you can have best approximation.
